Who else out there has been dreaming of kilts lately? Nobody? Just me? Alright then. But, seriously if you haven’t caught an episode of the new Starz show Outlander you’re missing out! Although the show is great (in my humble opinion), my great love is the book series.  Now that could be because the book series features eight books whereas the show is only one season in, or because I’m a born and bred book worm. Despite the difference the show has done a good job of staying true to the books so far. This series has a little bit of everything: romance, historical fiction and nonfiction, battle scenes, and sci-fi. I may even be missing a couple, fill free to jump in if you’ve read the series.

For those of you who have never heard of Outlander I’ll do my best to fill you in. It begins with a 20th century British nurse, Claire, honeymooning in Scotland who is accidentally transported to the 18th century when she walks through some standing stones. Once there she falls in with a group of Scotsmen where her knowledge of medicine comes in handy when she has to set the shoulder of a young man named Jamie (who is completely irrelevant to the whole story btw *wink wink). And the rest as they say is history, and by history I mean a crazy roller coaster of emotions of course.  I will say the books contain pretty strong adult content as does the show so if that is something you tend to avoid the series may not be for you.

I first came across the series several years ago while looking for something new to read at my local public library. I hadn’t realized it was a series at first and ended up reading the third book, Voyager, first. I immediately went back and checked out the first two. I’m always looking for something new to read and after eight books I’m even more hooked than ever before. I highly recommend both the series and the show, and I think it has a little bit of everything for everybody. Let us know what you think of Outlander, and feel free to offer us any recommendations!
